Field Hockey: run pull back and pass to score

Teach players how to escape crowded areas with a skilful pull back to shake off defenders

Give players the confidence and the knowledge to know how and when to take their man on in a 1v1

Set out 2 slaloms with players lining up behind both start cones.

Players run with the ball in between the 2 cones to immidiately pull the ball back out from between the cones and change direction - to run around the single cone.

The boxes formed by four cones in this drill should be around 1 meter by 1 meterin size.

The first player in each group runs to the ball and continues to run with the ball to the next box, stops the ball in the box and runs on to the end.

The next player then runs the ball back to the other box to leave the ball there again for the next player.

4 Teams, ball in each team. 1st player in each team has to run around the outside of the inside square back to their starting cone. Then give the ball to the next player. Variation on running in the same direction is that 2 teams run clockwise, other 2 anti clockwise.

The aim of the game is to try and score goals from about 2m out.

The length of the game is approximately 2-3 minutes long and starts on the first whistle and stopped on the second whistle.

When the game is stopped it is important that there is a winner on each pitch. In the case of a draw the winner is decided on the throw of a stick (flat or round). Once every pitch has a winner all the winners move up one pitch (so if the player is on pitch 6 he moves to pitch 5). The losers do the opposite, they move one pitch down. The winner on pitch 1 and the loser on the lowest pitch have nowhere to move so they stay on their pitches.

Once everyone has moved the game can start again.
