Gary Key Coach, England

DESCRIPTION

Large goal at one end. Small central goal/gate at other end, or two small side goals/gates. Attacking team (ATT) tries to score in the main goal. One of the attackers (ATT) starts by taking a free-hit, playing the ball in to a team-mate from behind the line. Defenders (DEF) man-mark the other ATT. If ball is turned over by the DEF, they all attack the small goal(s). If the ATT hit the ball out, reset. Switch ATT/DEF after [5] attempts/minutes. NOTE: First ball in must be a pass - free-hit taker cannot self-pass in this game. Progressions: (to increase pressure on the free-hit taker): If DEF turnover the ball within [10] sec, they all attack the small goal(s) 3v1 (vs the free-hit taker only). (easier for attackers): 5v3 or attacking overload. But, ATT cannot score until after 10 sec/making 5 passes. If DEF turnover in that time, they attack the small goal 3v1.

COACHING POINTS

This activity can be used to practice free-hit taking / long corners / man-marking / outletting. 7 players is the ideal number. If numbers are even, one defender can start near the goal, so that other players are all paired up. Feedback: Receivers: draw your marker wide to make space in the middle / point to where you want the ball, then make a through run. Consider a pass-back/one-two with the free-hit taker. Markers: how far away should you stand? (touch-tight) Attackers: the best teams are those in which players running without the ball, not with the ball. Free-hit taker: If all players are marked, pass the ball into a space where your player is most likely to reach it first. Make eye contact with that player first.
