Community | GK training - Basic ready position

Gary Key Coach, England

DESCRIPTION

Outfielder passes to GK from top of D (can be high or low pass) and continues advancing towards penalty spot. GK parries or kicks the pass back to outfielder. On receiving the pass-back, outfielder immediately shoots at goal. One-touch only. Variation for lower abilities: 2 touches.

COACHING POINTS

Aim of this activity is to get GK to stop a shot, quickly resume ready position and immediately stop a follow-up shot. First pass takes the GK out of their ready stance. Basic ready stance: Feet pointing forward (not outward), so you can side-step more effectively + heels on ground, so that 1) you are stable and comfortable, and 2) Shoulders over knees over toes, so that balance is over front of your feet. Put same balance on both feet. Elbows off your body and slightly to front Show the attacker the flat of your (left) hand and stick, so you can react quicker to shots. Out wide, not in front of your body. When a shot comes, standing still + balanced in ready stance, even if you're on one side of goal, is better than trying to move across into central position.
