Beyond Sticks Coach, United States of America

DESCRIPTION

There are three attackers, each standing at one of the blue cones, all three have a ball. There are also three defenders, each standing at one of the orange cones facing the attacker at the blue cone in front of them: this is about 5 yards away from the 50yard line. Coach call a name of one of the attackers who takes their ball and starts attacking. The other two attackers leave there ball and help the attacker with the ball. In the meantime, the defender who was in front of the attacker whose name was called has to sprint to the 50 yard line and before they can turn and start defending. So in theory, there should be a short 3v2 until this third defender has recovered.

COACHING POINTS

1. discuss with your team how the defenders are going the solve this problem. Since the attacker with the ball is the most dangerous person, it is likely that another defender should step to the ball. This means that the recovering defender needs to take over another attacker. 2. Talk about running lines. As a defender you want the shortest way and direct way to the defender but also want to make sure you come under the ball. Discuss when it's good to do a banana cut (running in a curve) versus when to directly attack.
