Grace Stewart - Alternating Box Drill Leading.mov

Excellent, used the drills at our first training session today with...
Shane, Hockey Coach

DESCRIPTION

Striking exercise(s): alternating box leads (2 drill variations)

Exercise 1:

  1. Set up a box (will need to condense the drill shown on video due to limited space).
  2. Receiver leads to either cone and receives pass, with the deeper player leading to the alternate box corner, they then receive a pass and take a shot on goal.

Exercise 2:

  1. Like above, the receiver leads to either cone, with the deeper player leading to box opposite corner.
  2. Receiver gives and go before driving into the circle and taking a shot at goal. The deeper player becomes the receiver and the passer becomes the deeper player.

Variations for senior and skilful groups:

  • Make it more reactionary by having the deeper player lead to chosen side of box and closer receiver has to rubberneck and look over shoulder before reacting to their lead
  • Opportunity to use specific skills before entering the circle or when shooting at goal (incorporate a left to right drag before entering circle, reverse jink upon receive, tommas only etc.)

COACHING POINTS

  • Quality of passing and execution of shot at goal
  • Sharp and high quality leads
  • Cut through receives going forward in movement for senior players
