Set up:
- Move the goal back to create a ¾ pitch and place a makeshift throwdown circle.
- 2 equal teams of 9 aside. This may mean there will be rolling subs depending on numbers.
Rules:
- There will be 3 sets of 8 minutes, each with a slightly different focus on formation and pressing to apply pressure and win the ball back.
- Normal hockey rules with feet, stick tackles etc.
- Penalty corners will be a flick.
- 1 minute reflection in between the 1/3
1/3 focus:
Team 1- Half court press
Team 2- Attacking formation (up to them what they think this may look like)
2/3 focus:
Team 1- Defensive formation (up to them what they think this may look like)
Team 2- Kicking back.
3/3 focus:
Team 1-Kicking back
Team 2- Half court press.
Coaching Points:
- Give 1-2-1 feedback as players come off the pitch and switch. Also encourage players to give each other feedback. Interject feedback from previous sessions.
- Speak to players on the side as to what they can see in front of them and how they would do it differently. We want independent players, but through supported guidance.
- Alter the ½ court press if it is not in the right position or is not being held.
- The use of freezeframes to highlight issues and gaps there may be in the press/formation. Additionally, where things have done well!
- React and coach where and when I see things. Hard to plan for as I do not know what will happen.
- In the 1-minute break a member from each team will switch over and give feedback to the other team of what they did well and could have improved on.
Progression Coaching Points:
- Link them to a variety of both skills based and non-skill-based techniques, tactics, and physical aspects we have done over the course of the sessions.
- Encourage players to keep their team score and try to work out what the point is for.
