Roller Hockey

I really appreciate the Hockey Coaching on Sportplan. The senior girls...

DESCRIPTION

Set up:

- Allow the girls to split themselves into 4 equal teams. They will each need to be in a different colour.
- Place a mini goal on each side of the square.

Rules:

- You cannot move more then 5 paces with the ball when it is in your hands.
- The ball must be rolled below knee height of the tallest player on the pitch.
- If you are defending you cannot get any closer, then 1m to the ball carrier.
- When you have the ball, it can only be held for 3 seconds otherwise it is a turnover ball.
- After scoring in a mini goal the team keeps possession and tries to score then in the next right goal- the whole pitch orientation changes for both teams!
- The ball can be intercepted with any part of the body.

- Closing the player down early using the body positioning learnt in week 1 so they then are stuck for a pass and more likely to turn the ball over.
- Lots of communication between teammates so a double-teaming situation could be created, or some sort of formation could be formed to apply pressure. Are they going to zonal mark or go man-to-man?
- Getting players to understand that patience is key to winning the ball back as they cannot go to tackle this time. This links to how they are going to apply effective pressure without engaging- something they could do with a stick and ball.
- Building a defensive mindset of ‘what is my next job’ when a goal is scored so they can move to defend the next goal. Hopefully, it will start to build up a more resilient player.
- Body position should be low to the ground, light on the feet and wide in the arms to try and increase the reach of getting the ball or channelling a certain way.

Progression Coaching Points:

- Try to get players to shout when the numbers have changed on either pitch.
- The left-hand pitch is going to get more chaotic as the number of players increase so encourage more movement off the ball and possibly a change in the way the teams are defending.
- Do not tell players to switch pitches as I want to see if they figure it out for themselves that the stronger players could aid an underload on the right-hand pitch.
