Defensive intercept and clear

DESCRIPTION

  1. Attacker drives from 23 down sideline to baseline.
  2. Attacker crosses ball in, aiming between penalty spot and goalline. Attacker 1 then sprints back to the square on the 23, ready to receive the clearance.
  3. Defender 1 attempts to intercept the pass, then carry to the corner and hit the ball up the sideline to the cone square on 23.
  4. If Defender 1 misses the intercept Defender 2 must close down the receiving attacker to prevent them attacking while Defender 1 recovers.
  5. Both attackers inside the D are working together to score a goal.
  6. The defenders are trying to carry out of the D and clear up the side line to the 23.
  7. Repeat on the opposite side of the pitch.

COACHING POINTS

  • Focus on the intercept, stick position and how to recover and use the ball.
  • Positioning of GK and D2 to cover D1's attempted intercept. 
  • Using the hit effectively, how to make the hit without the giant back swing.
