Long-Pass + Shoot Drill

Excellent, used the drills at our first training session today with...
Shane, Hockey Coach

DESCRIPTION

1. Short warm-up: pairs 23y apart hit passes to each other. i.e. slap-shot/hit.

2. Pass+move drill.

  • 2 sets of players on both sides of pitch. A pass to B, B to C, C to D, D shoots.
  • Follow your pass.

Safety rules:

  1. D must recycle ball back to A if the other D is shooting. Optional penalty (i.e. run a lap) to enforce this rule if necessary!
  2. Pass along the ground. Shots can be high.

Progression:

  • A pass to C to B to D

COACHING POINTS

This activity practices long-range passing, i.e. hitting + slap-shots.

Coach monitor passing technique + accuracy, foot stance and hand positions etc. depending on ability level of players.

Questions/feedback:

  • Are long-range passes useful? Why/why not? (help us to get forward-fast-first / more likely to get intercepted than shorter passes)
  • When receiving: post up, don't back up
  • What is recycling? How does it help us? (helps us keep possession if there is no option to shoot/go forward)
