Netball Hockey

DESCRIPTION

3 or 4-a-side game(s), with "netball" rules. Score into the goal, or by carrying/passing over the opposition's backline. Include GK(s) if available.

Rules:

1. No moving with the ball
2. No tackling, interceptions only
3. All players 2m apart

Variations/progressions:

• To increase intensity: ball-carrier must pass within 3secs
• To increase intensity: when ball goes out, throw on a random ball
• Scoring with GKs: 1pt per goal / save, 2pt per lifted goal / goal from a cross / goal within 6m area / long-distance goal
• Mismatched teams: next scorer joins the opposition team for 2mins
• Pitch size: have 2 different-sized pitches, and rotate teams between pitches after [5min].

COACHING POINTS

Suits beginners + mixed ability groups, because:

• there is less pressure on the ball-carrier (no tackling, so less need to protect the ball)
• limited need for ball control (no dribbling)

This places emphasis on:

• Passing and receiving: the ball-carrier can focus on looking for and making passes instead of protecting the ball; receivers get practice receiving under pressure; accurate passing, to avoid interceptions
• Leading (off-the-ball movement): ball-carrier cannot go forward, so there should be constant off-the-ball movement by team-mates in order to move the ball up the pitch; and by opposition players, to mark them
• Spacial awareness: less bunching + chasing the ball, because players must be 2m apart
• Marking and evading markers

Questions/feedback:

• Can we increase the ball pace (speed of passing)? How might that help us? (harder to cut out passes)
• Can we release the ball earlier? (3-sec possession timer)? How might that help us attack? (receivers are harder to follow + mark)
• How can the players off the ball help the ball-carrier to release the ball earlier? (By moving into space to create more passing options)
