D 3v3 with transition at the top

Excellent drills, very detailed videos. Useful site for my U15 boys...
Parry, U15 boys Hockey Coach

DESCRIPTION

2 Players at the top keep on transitioning the ball about looking for leads from players in the box to play to. Blue team are attempting to score goals and red team attempt to turn the ball over and play out to the players at the top.

Can be progressed to include another player defending against the two at the top, normally with a cone to recover back to when they pass before engaging them to prevent pressure to quickly. This can also be the keeper if the team is struggling to create many shots on goal.

Other progressions include bounce passes from good leads resulting in the player at the top that made the combination being able to join the attack. This can also be progressed to engage the second to a 5v3 with the defensive task then being to break out to the 23m line if they turn the ball over. If using a defender on the transition players the bounce passes activating them can also activate the defender into the full game.

Start with the top players relatively static before encouraging them to move around more to support play and change angles of attack.

COACHING POINTS

Questions:

If we're struggling to find passing lines what can we do as players on and off the ball to create them?

(Can push towards intended responses with: What would happen if instead of being at the top of the D the player with the ball moved around the side?; and if their other supporting player joined how would that effect play?)

Looking to move defenders out of position and move ourselves to change the angle of attack.

What sort of communication will be effective in this scenario? Why? When?

Both verbal and non verbal will be useful here along with ball player identifying fake leads from attackers to wrongfoot defenders.

Once we've activated an extra attacker what should we be looking to do? (Both when there is a recovering defender involved and not)

Differences in these scenarios between attacking at pace and being patient in moving the ball about to create opportunities.
