Backfoot defence

(for age 6-8 use footballs or giant tennis balls, for age 8+ use tennis balls)Six feeds each practice, then rotate clockwise. One bounce football thrown in, feed on one knee.NOTE Safety: No attacking shots (OUT!)

Back foot batting

Forward Defence

Each batter gets 6 balls each and then rotates. The thrower delivers the ball on one knee making the ball bounce once to the knee height of the batter. If the ball is wide or the ball is left then another ball is bowled. The aim is for the batsmen to defend the ball and aim to hit the ball through the cones. For safety reasons no attacking shots are permitted.

Group coaching for the back foot defence

Setup the practice as shown. Each player has 8-10 balls, then all rotate clockwise. In the first round of 8-10 players must play every other shot with the top hand only. Make the last round competitive: try to survive all 8-10 balls without getting out. If you are out, change round. On the practice round, players get another ball if one goes wide. On the competitive round, have 8-10 balls whether players leave the ball or play and miss. If a player deliberately plays an attacking shot he loses that round of 8-10 balls. (Be strict on this point).

Group coaching for the front foot drive

Create a V-Shaped area out in front of the batter. Working in groups of 6 players take it in turns to bowl, field and bat. The batsman aims to strike the ball beyond the fielders using a front foot drive. The fielders must prevent the ball from getting past them. Every time the batsman gets the ball beyond the fielders, within the coned are, they score a point.

Singles Game as Teams

With a bowling machine set to a certain length. The batsmen play tip and run. They can be given out when they are run out, caught or bowled out. If you hit an attacking shot you only get 1 run.

Survival Game

Organisation: Divide the group into groups of 8-10 and organise as shown in the diagram. Each batter bats until dismissed by being bowled, caught directly or after one bounce or by lbw. Batter may leave or play defensively. Any attacking stroke used results in immediate dismissal for safety reasons. Fielders must keep a safe distance from the bat.Equipment: 1 bat and 1 tennis ball per group. 1 set of stunps. Chalk markings

The quick singles game

This game can be played in teams (6-10 a-side) or in pairs (8-10 players). Rules of the game: There should be a batter at both ends. If playing in pairs, give each pair two or three wickets. If playing in teams, when a wicket falls it is the turn of the next batsman. Tip and run, or two or three balls to make a run. The coach throws either all front foot defence or all back foot defence bowls. The fielders must stay on the cones or with one hand on the wall until the ball is thrown, otherwise batsmen automatically get a two run bonus. Ways of getting out: Bowled, caught, run out, stumped, playing an attacking shot, or failing to score off the limited number of deliveries. The batsman can only score singles but the boundaries count for overthrows. Overthrows: side walls = 2 runs, back wall behind wicket keeper = 1 run, front wall = 4 runs (Unless you hit a 4 you can run singles to add to the side and back wall scores.) If a batsman leaves the ball it does not count and he does not have to run. If the batsman plays and misses it counts as a delivery

Short Ball Practice Front foot...

Can be done in pairs/ groups of three. One batter and one feeder minimum required, with 6 tennis balls per pair/group. Each batter should be wearing a minimum of helmet and gloves on. This drill is designed to improve player's confidence against the short ball. Feeds should range from heights 1,2 and 3, and each batter should have 10 feeds before swapping over. Feeds are from a close range, under arm feed, without bouncing, from a kneeling position. The batter should be encouraged to learn to defend and/or evade at first, gaining confidence and getting them in a better position than before to attack after.

Underarm cross-over - continuo...

Set up two cones, 10m apart and 10m from the target stump.(This drill is best performed in front of a net as shown).Coach rolls the balls out one after another down the middle of the two cones.As the balls come out players must attack them one at a time, running diagonally from alternate cones, to pick up the ball and throw them back looking to hit the stump.Players then join the back of opposite queue.

Dive Catching - To your right ...

Diving catch taken to the player's right, after walking in towards the catching board (note - catching board is optional but recommended if availible).Players must attack the catch by walking in towards the board.Once the catch is taken, player must get to their feet qucikly and aim to hit the stump.Group 2 of players are backing up and return the ball to the coach.After players have performed a diving catch or returned the ball to the coach they run to the back of the other group and the drill continues.

Target Throwing and Hitting th...

Set up as shown: two sets of stumps with a wicket keeper with a ball behind each. Two lines of players. The WK facing the two lines starts by throwing the ball out for player 1 to run out and catch Player 1 catches the ball and throws the ball over the stumps for the WK to catch. The second WK (player 4) now rolls the ball out for the fielder to run onto, gather and then throw at the stumps. Player 4 collects the ball and leaves it behind the stumps for the fielder. Players then rotate, with players 4 joining the back of the opposite line and player 1 taking up the role of second WK. Drill should be continuous.

Walking in Catching Catching -...

This drill is best perfromed in two groups of 6-8 players. Set up the two cones 7 metres apart. The first player walks in to the 'goal' and sets up to take the catch. The coach hits the catch to the player, who has to move to either their right or left. Once caught the ball is returned to the coach and the player that has taken the catch returns to the back of the line.

Coach stands in the middle of a semi circle of 6-10 players, holding a ball.One player throws a ball at the coach, who bats it away using the ball they are holding. This will send the ball off at a strange angle and make it difficult to catch. The person nearest to the ball should catch it.If they drop the ball then they move to the right hand side of the semi circle. The person at the far left of the semi circle at the end wins.

Players work in groups of 5, in a grid with 5 cones set up in a zig-zag formation, roughly 7 metres apart.Each player stands on a cone. All players, except for those queueing behind the first cone require balls.On the coach's call player 1, on the first cone, aims to get to collect the ball that has been dropped from shoulder height by the player on the cone in front of them, before the ball bounces twice.This is one pick-up.Player 1 then gives the ball back to the player on the cone, and sets themself before the coach gives the next call.Again the working player aims to get to the next ball before second bounce.This process is repeated until all players have performed 4 pick-ups.

For larger groups, with a minimum of 5-10 players. The first player (1) rolls the ball out diagonally for the player on the same side as them (2) to run out to, intercept and flick at the opposite stump. A player on the other side (3) backs up the ball and rolls it out diagonally for the next player on the same side as them (4) to run out and collect.

Player 1 rolls the ball out to player 2 who shys at the stumps, meanwhile player 1 has moved behind the stumps (backing up), ready to collect the ball.<br /><br /> Player 2 then runs to player 1's original position.<br /><br /> Player 1 then throws the ball to players 2. Player 1 now joins back of other group on the opposite side. Group B do exactly the same.

Two players per team, stood about 4-5 metres apart between two cones (the goal). Both teams must try to protect their goals by stopping the opposition from throwing the ball through their goal. Using only underarm throws players must try and score in their opponent's goal. A goal is awarded every time their opponent either drops the ball or fails to prevent it passing between their cones.

Cricket: Ground fielding drill

Two teams pass the ball to their team mates with an overarm throw which must bounce only once and then must be caught. Using the throws to advance towards the opposition's grid players must not step inside the grid. When they get close enough they can throw at the stumps. If they miss a team mate can run around the back of the stumps to catch the ball. If caught that team can have another shot, if the opposition catch the ball they then move back up the field to the opposition's grid.

Cones are set out as a gate, in the point fielding position and extra cover fielding position.Players split into 2 groups in each of the gates.Coach will position themselves at the strikers end stump with a bat. Coach will serve himself and strike a ball towards the point or extra cover gate. Receiving player will catch or gather the ball, return it to the coach and join the back of the queue.This drill can be played as a competition, coach vs players. For every clean catch or gather, the players receive a point and for every misfield, the coach will receive a point.
