Rugby: Ruck Clearing Exercises

Your tips and session ideas have really brought some interest back...
Eifion, Rugby Coach

DESCRIPTION

  • Progressive exercises to improve clearing out at the ruck
  • Lay a tackle tube on the floor with another tube on top, angled into the air, with a ball on the floor in front of the first tube
  • CLEAR: The player starts lying flat on the ground in a press up position, before angling their run and tackling the top tube
  • ROLL: Same set up, but the tube is tiled the opposite direction. The player runs round and wraps their arms round the tube before rolling away to the right with the momentum of their run.

COACHING POINTS

  • When approaching the tubes, go with knees bent, and wrap arms round the tube before driving forwards and upwards and tackling to the ground.

  • The more powerful the run, the easier it will be to roll the player. The left side should face the sky first when rolling.

  • The tackler has a decision to make, either tackle or roll, depending on the positioning of the defender over the tackle tube.

PROGRESSION

  • Add in a defending player that’s in the rucking position instead of the second tube
  • Give the tackler a decision to make
  • Either the defender is in the jackal position trying to take the ball, meaning the roll technique should be employed
  • Or the defender is just there in a set low position, meaning they should be cleared out by a tackle.
