This attacking pattern is loosely based on the blocker pattern. The idea is to increase your options by incorporating one of your pods (4 forwards) into your backline. The blue 'guys' are forwards and the red 'guys' are the backs. In this animation, the backs always play the back option but at any point, the forwards could also be an option - it depends on who the defenders commit and hence where the gaps are.
