Lay up Technique: (Right Handed Player)
*Walk through with the entire class. Each student should have a ball go through the steps*
Begin by holding the ball in both hands, Triple threat position, feet parallel and shoulder-width apart. Step forward with the left foot and let the ball bounce once near this foot. Catch the ball in both hands off the dribble, step right foot, then left foot, keeping the ball on the right side of you body. Now push upward off your left foot, driving the right knee up to increase the height of your jump.
The right hand is placed on top of the ball, the left hand is on the side of the ball for support. Keep both hands on the ball until you reach the height of your jump, bringing the ball up to a shooting position. Now your right hand wrist should be cocked back to release the ball of your fingers. Release the ball softly against the backboard with the target being the top right hand corner on the back board. Keep your eyes on the target and follow through where you want the ball to go.
Lay-Up Progressions:
-Have students stand about two giant steps from the wall. Check for good spacing. Practicing pushing off with the left foot, driving the knee upward, and laying the ball up against the wall.
-Switch hands (students practice against the wall with their left hand)
-Have students line up on either side of a basket. From a standing position 5 feet away students push upwards and push the ball off the target. (They should be jumping off their inside foot and pushing it up with their outside hand)
-Have students move the lines back and continue to practice their lay-ups this time bouncing the ball 2-3 times on the way to the basket.
Lay-up Relay:
Divide teams evenly between each basket. Have each student get a ball and get into file formation on both the left and right sides of the hoop. They should be 10-15 back from the basket. On "GO" both players dribble the ball to the basket and do a lay-up. They rebound their own shot. You rebound your own shot and dribble back to the end of your teams line. First team to make X amount is the winner.(Choose a number that is achievable) Shout out each team your team scores a basket.
