Release the Player to the Ball Drill - (8 v 7)

DESCRIPTION

The attacking teams starts with the ball on the half line, with 8 attackers. 

  1. 3 x ST in the front 25
  2. 2 x AM forward of the ball
  3. 3 x HB on the half line

 

The defending team starts with 7 defenders.

  1. 3 x Marking players
  2. 1 x FD/SW
  3. 2 x AM who are marking
  4. 1 x CH who is on the ball

 

Continue to play.

 

2 x Recovering Defenders (ST) can be added to the drill to alter the numbers to 8 v 9, you can choose when they enter the play

  • Ball crosses 25yd line
  • Ball enters circle
  • Specific time frame

 

Defenders play the ball out to the half line if they get it.

COACHING POINTS

Attackers

  • Create Space. Width & Depth.
  • Look to move the ball quickly and beyond the opposition FD/SW where possible.
  • Look to create 2 v 1
  • Look to utilise the T spot.
  • Penetrate through the sides of the circle.
  • Ensure there are always players in the circle.
  • Circle Positioning when the ball is in the Circle
  1. Penalty Spot
  2. Back Post
  3. 90 Degrees (both)
  4. Top of the Circle
  5. BODY POSITION to EXPECT the ball

 

Defenders

  • Use CH to send the ball to one side of the field.
  • FD/SW chooses a time to release a player to the ball carrrier, COMMUNICATION. Then marks an opponent. This should mean the opposition only have one unmarked opponent, furthest from the ball and least dangerous.
  • Players can be slightyl zonal.
  • Delay if possible.
  • Make ball take the longest route to goal.
  • Play ball side to be first to the ball.
  • Don't overcommit in the tackle, this is a time where an eliminated defender can result in a goal against.
