- cover/mark space rather than individual
- teams may choose to give defenders 'zones' to mark in areas of pitch which are most dangerous defensive areas
- key adv - if defensive team manage to gain possession then player with ball will be less likely to be closely marked & in better position to move with ball uncontested
Man-to-Man
- mark an indivdual opponent
- position between player & goal is important in order to utilise man-to-man effectively
- drawback - if an opposing team are faster & more skillful then they should be able to get around individual players easily
- most teams will have 1 player in who doesn't mark a specific player known as a 'sweeper' or 'cover full back' as cover
