Man-marking with long passes

I love using Sportplan. It's been a great help for co-ordinating hockey...
Laura, Hockey Coach

DESCRIPTION

Passer (blue) behind line plays long ball to one of their team-mates, defenders (red) stay close to their player.

If attackers win the ball, they try to score in the goal.

If defenders win ball, they all attack the 2 wide gates 3v1 (vs the passer only). Change roles after 5 attempts/minutes.

Variations:

  • 2 passers on the line, up to 5 marking pairs.
  • If defenders win the ball, they attack 3v2 (vs the passer and the player who lost their mark).

COACHING POINTS

Questions:

  • Why mark? (To stop a player getting the ball, and put pressure on them immediately if they do get it)
  • Should you face away from or toward goal? (away - facing the ball, facing the right way to defend and clear)
  • Where to stand when marking? (between the opposing player and the ball, so you can deter a pass or intercept it)
