Possession Game

Excellent, used the drills at our first training session today with...
Shane, Hockey Coach

DESCRIPTION

Mark off a suitable square area with a ring or box in the middle. Divide players into groups of 3v1 or 4v2. If there are 4 attackers, place 4 balls in the box. If there are 3 attackers, place 3 in the box.

A defender passes a ball from the box to an attacker.

Attackers must then keep the ball for [5] passes before trying to place the ball back in the box.

Defenders must hit the ball out of the playing zone.

Keep playing until there are no balls left in the box, then switch defenders.

Variations:

  • Bigger/smaller playing zone
  • Defenders must carry the ball out of the playing zone (i.e. win the ball and then keep possession)
  • Attackers must keep possession for [7 or 10] passes before they can 'score'.
  • Vary group dynamics and numbering by occasionally switching players between groups

Optional scoring system:

One rotating player can be assigned to keep score / count passes, if the coach cannot do this.

Attackers:

  • 1pt for putting ball back in box after making 5 passes
  • 3pts for putting ball back in box after making 10 passes

Defenders:

  • 1pt for hitting(carrying) a ball out of the playing zone

COACHING POINTS

This activity practices keeping possession.

Attackers should try to draw the defender(s) away from the box, then outmanoeuvre the defenders by passing around them.
