3 balls are set in line in front of the player. The player shadows backhand stroke and tries to extend the stroke through all balls.
Many players have problems with depth of the ball and they don't know why. The coach's job is to explain that proper extension results in deeper shots. Players have to learn that topspin shots can be also executed while moving the racquet through the ball.
In this drill, the player works on backhand's extension. 3 balls on the ground are visual targets to facilitate learning process. After successful shadow attempts, the coach can feed some balls to challenge players more. It is of utmost importance to feed the ball into the proper spot because inability to do that can ruin everything.
