Field Hockey: passing round the back

Layups are the highest percentage shots in basketball - when they're open. Against athletic defenders and help-side shot blockers, traditional layups become difficult. Modern scorers need a variety of finishes to convert in traffic.

The Euro Step

The signature modern finishing move:

The mechanics: First step in one direction, second step in the opposite direction, creating separation from the defender.

Timing: The move happens after gathering the ball, using both steps legally.

Deception: Sell the first direction before changing. Eyes and shoulders mislead defenders.

Variations: Wide euro step, tight euro step, euro to floater, euro to reverse.

The Floater

Scoring over shot blockers:

Purpose: Releases before the shot blocker can contest, using touch over athleticism.

One-foot floater: Off the inside foot, creating space from the defender.

Two-foot floater: Jumping off two feet for more control and balance.

Arc and touch: Higher arc avoids blocks but requires soft touch.

Reverse Layups

Using the rim as protection:

Baseline reverse: Going under the basket and finishing on the opposite side.

Rim protection: The rim shields the ball from shot blockers.

Body positioning: Keep the body between the defender and the ball.

Both hands: Reverse finishes require ambidexterity.

Contact Finishes

Scoring through physicality:

Absorb contact: Brace for contact without letting it disrupt the shot.

And-one mentality: Seek contact when you have advantage.

Strong hands: Grip the ball firmly through contact.

Protected finishes: Use off-arm legally to create space.

Change of Pace Finishes

Gather step slow-down: Slow down on the gather to freeze defenders.

Hesitation: Pump fake or shot fake to get defenders off their feet.

Up-and-under: Shot fake, let defender fly by, finish underneath.

Developing Finishing Skills

Both hands: Practice finishing with either hand from both sides.

Various angles: Straight on, from the wing, baseline, all require different approaches.

With contact: Practice with pads or defenders to simulate game conditions.

Game speed: Finishing moves must be practiced at full speed.

Getting out of High Press

What are the best things to get your players to do when you come up against a full press / 3/4 press, anything that's putting a lot of pressure on high up the pitch?

How to improve the ball transfer from midfield to forwards?

Dear colleagues, I am coaching a 1st women team (Argentina) and the system that is working for us very well is 3-1-3-3. Given the quality players we've got in the midfield and attack we try to emphasize our offensive game all the time. The problem I am struggling to resolve is that the forwards do not get involved in chances to score inside the circle very often. The few chances the forwards have they are able to score but it is our midfielders who most of the time get to the circle in possession with the ball. I would like to see a quick transfer of the ball from the midfielders to the forwards who need to be in touch with the ball more often during the game and have the midfielders supporting the attack rather than being the leaders of the attack. Is there any drill or way to improve this aspect of the game? Thanks for your time. Martin

How to coach school team with novices and experienced players?

Hi,I perhaps naively, expected to have most of our team from last year carry over and only have a few new comers to integrate and get up to speed with the rest. However meeting the team at our first practice last night i find I have five players still at school from last year and the rest all new comers, most of whom had not held a hockey stick at all till practice. This being only my second season coaching (year 9 to year 13 boys) has left me feeling a little blindsided, and feeling quite unsure how to prepare practices that target both groups of boys. Do i lump them both groups together, keep them separate? What drills/exercises to best bring the new comers up to speed.I don't want to neglect either group, keep practice worthwhile for the experienced boys, but also bringing the new comers up to a level were they can mix in with the others and learn organically from them while practicing as a team. Decision making and moving for...

Recently been working hard developing the use of the dish around the back to create space. Working great but would now like to develop this with more drills. We have discussed decision making, leading runs and movement but I'm now looking for ideas of exercises that will develop these thoughts amongst the guys. All ideas for exercises we could use at training gratefully received
