DESCRIPTION

This is our basic 5-man lineout and how it should look prior to initiating the lineout movement.

COACHING POINTS

  • There are 5 men in the lineout, plus the Scrumhalf lingering 5 meters outside.
  • The lineout consists of the thrower (often the Hooker), a front lifter, a jumper, a "pivot" man, a back jumper, and a back lifter.
  • The lineout players should take up the entire 15 meter tram; more space for the defense to worry about.
  • The lineout captain (one of the jumpers) will make a call in a two round cadence and then the lineout called is initiated by the pivot man's movement.
  • The pivot man can turn to lift the backend of the front jumper or the frontend of the back jumper.
  • The movement of the lineout is ALWAYS initiated by the pivot man in order to ensure synchronicity of the lineout. One lineout player being off by a second will cause a lost lineout.
  • The basic lineout calls will be a throw to the front jumper or the back jumper.
  • A FRONT THROW is an EVEN number.
  • A BACK THROW is an ODD call.
  • For Example: "Texas 566, Texas 566" = a FRONT THROW
