There are a few options.

  1. When a player sees space around the ruck. The opposition may not have great defence around the ruck and so there is space to attack into. This is typically done by the scrum half.
  2. If you have enough forwards in and around a ruck and you feel as if you can make ground and keep the ball then it would be a good options for a forward player to pick and go.
  3. Often it is a good option to pick and go when you are a few feet away from the try line. This is because it`s easy to keep the ball in this situation and gain those few extra feet.
  4. Sometimes the scrum half gets caught in a ruck and it would be a good idea to pick and go here until the scrum half is available again.

When the ball is to slow coming out of the ruck or even quick ball from a ruck when the defence is already moving backwards.
