I am afraid not David.
That would be a forward pass and a scum to the opposition. The only time the ball can do that is if you are trying to catch a pass or kick and you inadvertantly knock it forward but catch it before it hits the ground.
The referee will decide if you are genuinely making an attempt to catch the ball. If he thinks you are delibarately knocking the ball on to gain an advantage he will give the opposition a scrum.
