You can:

  • Roll the ball back towards your own players
  • Place the ball at arms length and hold it there until it is cleared - your body should be horizontal to the direction of play
  • As above but "Jackknife" your body so it is in a V shape with your hands and feet towards your goal line
  • "Stretch" your body back to your goal line with your feet towards the opposition goal line and your hands towards your goal line - this means the ball is placed at the furthest point from the oppositiom

I believe that players should be coached to start thinking about ball placement in the tackle rather than when they hit the ground. That way, a player will use footwork to beat the tackle first and will put him/her in a better position to place the ball further back if unable to stay on their feet in the tackle
