U9s swarming around the ball

We coach U9s and one of the biggest problems is that they all swarm around the ball like bees around honey. We are repeatedly trying to explain the value of not doing this and use of space but to no avail. What coaching techniques can we introduce to get the kids to spread out and not all commit to the breakdown?

We have tried to encourage a bonus point if they spread out and form the "v" or diagonal within 3 seconds of the break down, then the next score is worth 3 unless they are tackled again then the formation needs to start again.  We also encourage the scrum half not to pass directly behind, which encourages the other players to spread out.

try to let them pick it up by manipulate the situation, so when they are swarming around the ball bring in a new bal at a player in space.

how to create space awareness

Description:

Goal of this session is to get the players not to swarm around the ball like bees. We want them to learn to sread out..

U9's swarm a lot around the bal, you will see that when you bring in a new ball to a player in the game when hey huddle up, that some of the clever players will start to stand and wait for the next ball coming in...

so the start up is simple; play a simple game of rugby and when they start to huddle up you give a call 'new ball'! and give the new ball to a player standing in the space....

Coaching Points:
  • start to let thm play
  • as they huddle up bring in a new ball
  • promote to play the space
  • give compliments to players standing outside the huddle to receive the next ball

In this agegrade you see them swarm like bees a lot... its there natural movement... being where the ball is... we need to condition the play so they start to hang off without overthinking it. 80% off learning we do without being consius about it...

good luck....

BTW this is a tactical game, so do not bother to much on technical flaws...
