Position discipline!

Position discipline!

I am a coach with an under 10 rugby side. Last season the team found it hard to stay in their positions (acting like a swarm of bees). Can anyone suggest how i can get them to stay in positions, particulary our backs.

Hi, I have the same issue with U9's and U10's. I have started laying out drills to keep them in tramlines using markers to keep them running in channels both in attack and defence. Uisng simple pasing and tackling whilst keeping their discipline. When defending you can also play 6 attackers and 3 defenders so each defender covers 2 lines and needs to cover across the line as the ball is moved from side to side

I would seperate the forwards from the backs when doing drills as they have different roles and goals to achieve, using the half and 1stV to co-ordinate team structure. i.e halfback organizes forwards who then communicates to the 1stV who keeps the backs in position. The last 15 minutes of training they are brought together and run as a team, i.e scrums, lineouts, ruck'n'mauls, back moves and kicks, get them talking to each other, communication does wonders. We are now at the U12 and have won 10 out of 11 games this year, pts for 330...pts agn 96. It may seem slow and tedious at the start but your patience will be rewarded. U10 is the right time and age group to start this phase in their rugby future, I hope this helps you in some way, all the best.

We did games that made that first the  'SH' and then both the 'SH'& 'FH' (first two to get to the ruck ruck, second two SH & FH) pass

The defence therefore had to stay in position and the 'attack' maintain line - deep and wide

It did work!

PS Under RFU rules we had 9 aside at U10 - Although we had backs and forwards once away from set piece we effectively played 7's - I suspect we'll adopt Marks view during U11 when we have 5 forwards and 7 backs
