My players often line-up too flat on attack, especially in later phases. How can I work on improving their depth?
Start the session with a simple 4 vs 3 attack v defence drill. Set up the cones fairly shallow for the attacking players to start on. They`re success rate shouldn`t be too high. To progress this talk about the importance of depth and set up cones as an attacking line (as deep as you want the players to be). They should realise how much easier it is to attack with depth with a higher success rate.
To progress this further have the defence and attack start on the same line (face to face). Then before feeding them the ball have the attack run back (still facing forward) so that they can work on creating their own depth. Don`t feed the ball to the attackers until they have enough depth!
Hope this helped!
