I need to coach a progressive session of 20 minutes for how to establish the principles of counter attack from turnover ball in contact coaching the palyers to counter attack. Any ideas please?
Hello Trevor, this sounds like a coaching task for a level 2 ;-)
Good starting point is to question the players to gain info on what their knowledge is of a counter attack i.e. where's it likely to come from and how best to attack the different areas of counter attack like a kick or from turnover ball.
I use 2 simple tactics from both a kick and turnover. If we take a kick, we feign towards the opposition mass i.e. where their greatest concentration of players are, then we switch to attack the space.
If we get counter from turnover, then we play quickly away from the breakdown - I say 2 or more short passes - and attack the space directly behind the gain line, which would've been left by the oppo setting up for an attacking play.
