I came to Riga a year or so ago to run a course with some of Latvia's leading coaches and we said the No 10 should be:

  • Accurate Passer – both hands
  • Quick passer
  • Threat to opposition defensive lines
  • All round good kicking skills
  • Good decision making under pressure
  • One of the team leaders

In our "Drills" section there are a number of practises you can use to improve these skills. Look under "Passing" for passing drills for instance.

The best way to improve your tactical awareness is to watch games and see what the No 10 does at various times during the game and then ask yourself why did they do that?

See what happens after the No 10 has kicked into the corner - does his or her team win the line out? If so, the No 10 had probably realised that their forwards were winning most line outs and so they kicked to create a good attacking position.

I hope this helps you
