This pre-season, I did a lot of work with a tractor tyre with my U16s side. We were able to change exercises, and it allowed the lads to make some games up themselves.

there was:

  • Activity - everyone was involved, no one holding contact pads!
  • Purpose - main aim was fitness, but the very nature of the tyre lends itself to improving body position and power
  • Enjoyment - most of the tyre games we ended up with were designed by the lads, and you always know when they've enjoyed it cause they ask to play at the next session

As a coaches measure of their fitness, I added in a 2.4km timed run, 30m sprint and a 200m sprint. All times were improved greatly just by the tyre work.

As a game measure, we're now 4 months into the new season and our stats read as:

  • scrums own put in - 100%
  • scrums oppo put in - 78%
  • own restarts won - 64%
  • Played 8, won 8, average points for 52(.4), against 5.2

And all we did was 30 mins with the tyre(s) at the start of the session!
