Matt, A lot of playes wear pads in the modern game - and no it is not a sign of weakness - I wear an under shirt shoulder pad to help prtoect an old injury (shoulder) All protecive clothing must be RFU approved and as with all things rugby the item of clothing must comply with the laws of the game. If in doubt ask the referee who will make a decision on whether the item is legal or not.
