At u11 level can the scrum half run from the back of a scrum

I think a pass has to be made from the back of a maul or ruck but I am not clear about the rules at the scrum .

There is no amendment in the U11 rules so assume it is allowed.

Thanks,
Antony

Depends on the rules you play at U11.  We play both so my SH must change week to week

Continuum (ORoP) RFU Regulations 15 Appendix I-D (old rules of Play) – Aug 2013

8. Scrum

(i) ....Neither of the locks may unbind to pick up the ball at the rear of the scrum but must remain bound onto the scrum until the ball is carried or passed out by the scrum half.

NRoP (As defined by RFU Regulation 15 Appendix D U11 New rules of Play – Sept 2014)

13 Scrum

(j) The scrum-half must pass the ball from the base of the scrum

Hi Mark,

I was talking about the new rules of play as referenced here:

England Rugby - New rules of play PDF

Not sure what version you have? But I can't find reference to the rule you quote.

Thanks,
Antony

Hi Antony,

I have to agree. In U10's it was clearly stipulated that the ball must be passed away from the scrum. The current version for U11 'New Rules' is 1st Sept 14 and the section on scrums is 12. There is no subpart (j). There is no reference that I can see to this so the assumption must be that they can now run off the back of a scrum. I will email my RFU contact for clarity though as I have already contcated them regarding the odd 'knock-on' regs..

Jon

Just as a update for you all. Twickenham have just updated the regulations for NRoP and now they have the line back in that clearly states that the scrum half must pass from the back of the scrum.

Thanks,

Antony

Has anyone found the official sanction for if a SH doesn't pass from the scrum, or if teh ball isn't passed from a maul or ruck.

Yes, it's a free kick.

Thanks,

Antony
