All the basic skills warmup routine

Sportplan rugby has played a large role in my team's love for the...

DESCRIPTION

We want t to work on the core skills as much as possible without changing stations. Above we are working on the following in a 20 minute set. All that is required is to move the cones back a bit each time.

White cones:
Roll lift one handed trying to keep the attacker off. Each guy has 30 seconds to see how many he can get into his hand. We will do it 3 times but each time change the groupings.

Yellow cones:
Working on the handpass. As quick as possible. Left and right. See if a group can break 20 in 30 seconds.

Then get them to switch hands.

The introduce the second ball if you feel the lads are up to it and see can they go 30 seconds without dropping the ball.

Finally if they are still going well instruct them to switch hands with the two balls.

Blue cones:
Dribbling game where each group is going against each other for 1 minute to see how many goals they get on the other. If they hit the ball wide they lose a score. This is to encourage them not to just hit the ball away.

Red cones:
Striking to hand from 15 to 20 metres away. again see how many a couple can get in a minute to see who wins and then swap the couples.

Orange cones:
This is longer striking ideally 40 metres apart give a score for each pass by a team that does not hit the ground. Give them a minute off their right and then a minute off their left combined score wins then move then switch partners

COACHING POINTS

The key message is that they trust what they are doing and they pass or strike to a guy and leave him worry about catching/controlling it. We need to get them into the habit of hitting long more often than short as short will never find the man

White cones:

  1. Guys nned to be down low spreading themselves out to give themselves a wide base.
  2. Hand needs to be way down the hurl and they are looking to catch the ball way below their knee.
  3. Get each of them to do 10 roll lifts each first before they start the competitive part and again make sure they are catching low.

Yellow cones:

  1. Always get them to throw the ball to each other first underhand (10 off both sides) as that is the handpassing technique.
  2. Get them to pass the ball to their team mates chest. This is much more likely to do if their palm is facing the mans chest on impact instead of facing up in the air. If facing up on impact it will be a loopy pass.

Blue cones:

  1. This is all about close control so they should shield the ball as much as possible and avoid the ball going out of the reach of their hurls.
  2. Non dominant hand should be down near the bottom of the grip to give them more control.

Red cones:

  1. This is all about trusting the strike.
  2. it should always be short hurl and never a push.
  3. Take a point off the team for everyone that comes up short when we are in the competitive part.
  4. Target should always be the head/chest

Orange cones:

  1. We want the lads to be striking from the hips.
  2. Much more power generated when you are striking slightly up. Angle of hurley will dictate trajectory.
  3. Make sure they are throwing the ball out. Most players have a tendancy to throw it too close to the body and will very seldom hit the sweet spot
