Tackle Contest Drill

Your tips and session ideas have really brought some interest back...
Eifion, Rugby Coach

DESCRIPTION

  • All thee players lie on backs about 1.5 - 2m apart
  • Middle player has the ball, and taps it on the ground to one side, then the other
  • Player then holds the ball straight up for a second, then places to either side.
  • When ball is placed both players either side of the middle player get to feet and contest the ball or clean out
  • Have 3 or 4 turns then switch around

COACHING POINTS

  • Speed onto feet is paramount
  • Wide base and good low body postion
  • Support body weight without putting hands on the ground (unlike in the video)
  • Understand when the ball is lost and concentrate on dislodging the other player

Extend the drill by mixing the placement length. This makes the defender choose:

  • If a short place - maybe attack the ball
  • If a long place - maybe step over the "tackled" player and "own" the space
