DESCRIPTION

Starting as a defensive line, this drill quickly turns into an attacking play after a successful tackle and turnover and tests both the speed with which supporting forwards make the breakdown, and the speed with which a secondary attack decision is made

COACHING POINTS

  • All players advance in defensive line to cones at 70% pace (1)
  • First 2 players turn and run towards ball at 100% pace (2), with first player going beyond ball and hitting tackle bag, and then rucking through first pad man to effect the turnover (3).
  • Defensive line meanwhile has turned at orange cones and now form an attacking line at 100% pace (2)
  • Player 2 plays dummy half and ships ball to attacking line who move through hands (4)
  • Players 1 and 2 get round and support behind attacking line as it moves
  • Second pad man chooses a location to set the defence each time without attacking line knowing
  • Attacking line takes ball into contact at point of pad man (5)
  • Players 1 and 2 ruck over
  • Attacking line resets and quickly chooses a line of attack beyond the ruck (6). There must be minimal time from ball going to ground to the final attacking move
