Defenders aim is to close down the D/space and force the attackter towards the base line.
Positioning: defender should close down the space on its fore stick by arching into that space and push the attacker towards the base line (1). When entering the D the defender should try to keep the attacker between itself and the baseline (2), protect its feet and let the attackter run into the goalie at the post (3).
It's important for the defender to be patient: it's tempting to try to tackle with the back stick when the attacker is entering the D; by doing that the defender open up their feet though. The only way to dispossess the attacker should be by jabbing; still with the stick in front of their feet.
