Exploiting Height and Width

Excellent, used the drills at our first training session today with...
Shane, Hockey Coach

DESCRIPTION

An attack-only drill, emphasising the importance of using the whole pitch when attacking.

COACHING POINTS

  • All passes should be slaps or hits.
  • Pre-scanning from all players is important, to recognise where their teammate is and hit them in stride.
  • Players should judge the timing of their runs, in order that they can receive the pass on the move, without breaking stride.
  • The CF's run should be arced, to maximise the change of receiving the ball (getting in front of the - imaginary, in this drill - defender is key)
  • The attacker who makes the baseline run must ensure that they enter the D before they release the ball - emphasise the importance of penetrating the D (increased likelihood of winning a PC).
  • The CF should shout for the ball, so that the baseline attacker (winger) knows when they're in a position to receive the ball; the winger shouldn't release the ball without knowing that the CF is able to make a play on it (avoid "Hit and Hope"!)
