Core skills:
Keeper pairs up with an outfield player and practices kicking ball with alternate feet while outfield player practices slap & hit to keeper.
In pairs 15-20m apart. Practice slap and hit through coned gate for accuracy.
Progressions:
Post-up to receive
Carry ball 2m to left or right before passing
Technical/tactical/physiological:
Slap
Focus on ball; hands together or apart and low to ground; low body position for power and to sweep stick along ground; feet sideways, step forward (lunge) to meet the ball; ball level with left foot, 1 stick length away; sweep stick in arc from behind right foot and follow through to target
Hit
Focus on back of ball; hands together; cock wrists rather than big backswing; body sideways with left shoulder pointing to target; bend knees; ball in front of left foot between 1-2 o’clock, just under 1 stick length away; follow through to target
Receiving
Hands apart; left shoulder pointing to where ball coming from; weight transfer from front to back foot as receive ball; stick stays in contact with ball during weight transfer to cushion ball
Post-up
Player needs to move towards the ball when receiving. If player waits for the ball to come to them to receive, there is a higher risk that the ball could be intercepted by a defender.
