GK training - Stopping high shots

Great site. An absolute must for coaches who are willing to change...

DESCRIPTION

Left hand saves only

Coach throws 6 high balls alternately to left and in front of GK. GK saves with left hand.

Notes:

  • When saving on left side, step sideways with left foot.
  • When saving in front of body, step right with right foot. Otherwise you may be tempted to twist your trunk, which may parry the ball into the right side of goal.

Stick save

Coach throws 6 high balls to right side of GK. GK saves with stick.

Notes:

  • Hold stick outwards ready to save, rather than in front of body.
  • flat of stick and flat of right hand shouldn't be parallel. Hold stick with the flat of stick slightly facing outwards. This is so you can attack ball by bringing hand forward slightly, without stick tilted. Otherwise, stick will tilt inwards when you bring hand forward and this may deflect ball into goal.
