GK training - Basic ready position

I love using Sportplan. It's been a great help for co-ordinating hockey...
Laura, Hockey Coach

DESCRIPTION

  1. Outfielder passes to GK from top of D (can be high or low pass) and continues advancing towards penalty spot.
  2. GK parries or kicks the pass back to outfielder.
  3. On receiving the pass-back, outfielder immediately shoots at goal. One-touch only.

Variation for lower abilities: 2 touches.

COACHING POINTS

  • Aim of this activity is to get GK to stop a shot, quickly resume ready position and immediately stop a follow-up shot.
  • First pass takes the GK out of their ready stance.

Basic ready stance:

  • Feet pointing forward (not outward), so you can side-step more effectively + heels on ground, so that 1) you are stable and comfortable, and 2)
  • Shoulders over knees over toes, so that balance is over front of your feet.
  • Put same balance on both feet.
  • Elbows off your body and slightly to front
  • Show the attacker the flat of your (left) hand and stick, so you can react quicker to shots. Out wide, not in front of your body.
  • When a shot comes, standing still + balanced in ready stance, even if you're on one side of goal, is better than trying to move across into central position.
