Shane, Hockey Coach

DESCRIPTION

5 players needed

5 cones needed

1 ball needed

One player can stand anywhere in the pentagon as an attacker.

3 players can position themselves on any side of the pentagon

  • NOTE: DEFENDERS MAY NOT ENTER THE PENTAGON BUT STAY ON THE EDGE AS DENOTED BY THE BLACK LINES
  • Defenders may move around the edge to prevent the attacker from escaping the pentagon.

The role of the attacker is to receive and break out of the pentagon in as few touches as possible and as cleanly as possible.

If the attacker is successful they return to the middle and attack again.

If a defender wins the ball they become the attacker.*

*when working with younger groups allow the attacker to stay in for a set number of reps so all players get a chance to attack and defend.

COACHING POINTS

  • Scanning
  • Where is the gap in the initial phase.
  • How can I exploit that gap?
  • What is the easiest route out and can I take that every time?

  • Receive
  • Dynamic towards the free space
  • What will the likely reaction be and how can I use that to my advantage?

  • Change of speed
  • Have to sell the first direction by carrying with purpose but slow enough so the defenders bite and open another game
  • Fast change of pace to exploit new space.
