Staying onside on defense

Staying onside on defense

I need drills that emphasize staying onside on defense. Any suggestions?

Hi Tim,

A good way to get your players staying onside is to implement strict rules in training. This could be done within a conditioned game of touch.

You can achieve this by penalising offside players in the game as a way of negative reinforcement. Get the attacking player who has been touched to go down and present the ball to give the defenders a clear offside line. You could give the other team a point for every offside player, make the offending player run back to their own try line or the player has to go down on their knee until play has broken down.

Similarly, you could make the offside line 1 metre back from the back of the breakdown to exaggerate the importance of retreating back onside.

Hope this helps,

Archie
