Rugby: Seven v Three

The following are the laws for this game:

1. Equal number of defenders and attackers.
2. Normal laws of sevens rugby apply; a knock on etc. results in a turn over.
3. The attacking team gets 8 touches before the ball has to be turned over.
4. Change this to suit your training goals. When an attacker is touched they: stop running, turn and present the ball to a support player who waits for the entire defence to gather in around the defender that made the touch.
5. Following a touch all defenders must gather in and be connected by touching another defender.
6. Only when the support player passes the ball out can the defence restart the game.
7. If the defence goes offside or operates illegally, the attack gains 10 meters.
8. If the defence does not get in quickly, the attack can gain 10 meters. Judge this depending on your player's fitness.
9. There is no kicking.

• One of your players will be the passer, and the other the catcher.
• The passer goes to one of the circles that has ball and the catcher goes to the empty circle.
• Using a pass from the deck, the passer passes the ball from each cone to the catcher, who sets the ball at a cone.
• Once the passer has finished one circle, they move to the next, and the catcher moves to the empty circle.
• The speed of this activity should build as the players get better.
• Don't forget to change the passer and catcher.

• Players start at the cones, pass the ball one circuit clockwise and one circuit anticlockwise.
• Following the two circuits, they take one step back. Thus making the circle bigger.
• They then repeat the 2 circuits of passing the ball around the circle, before taking another step back.
• Repeat until the circle is so big that the players are having trouble completing their pass.

Tell the players the following.......

1. Lay flat on the ground.
2. In a moment but not yet, I want you to get to your feet, but you cannot use your knees.
3. You will get up like a surfer, pushing up with your hands and jumping to your feet.
4. It's a race, lets see who can get up first?
5. On your call the place get to their feet and then back down again.
6. When they have got the idea, have some fun with it e.g. last one up sings two lines from their favorite song. But whatever you do has to be fun and not humiliating.
