Green Minus

What a fantastic tool. I've found a few drills that are unfamiliar,...

DESCRIPTION

9 hits 12, 12 switches with 10, 10 pops the ball back inside to a full-speed winger.

COACHING POINTS

  • Step 1
  • Same as Green Plus, 9 passes to 12, 12 performs a switch with 10.
  • 12 is flatter than normal. as with any Green variant, but the blindside winger is also quite close to the line.
  • Step 2
  • 10 now has an option to use his backs to the right, or play a small pop-pass back on his inside shoulder to an on-rushing winger.
  • It is important that this move is pulled off quickly to try to exploit the gap between backs ahead of the trailing forwards. As we all know, the inside shoulder is the hardest place to exploit, but with quick, accurate hands it can be done.
  • If 11 is not an option for the pass, 10 passes to 13 , who now has options left and right in 11 who continued his run (LEFT) and 15 (RIGHT).
  • if the pass to 11 is on, he should find himself facing a large gap between the line of defence and the opposition back 3. Options here include making yards and recycling the ball/ passing to 13 who continued his run through the defensive line / a chip & chase vs the opposition full-back.
  • On a Green Minus, it is important that 12 makes a big effort to help 11 after he makes his switch pass, as there won't be many others nearby to ruck.
  • Timing is everything in this move, as any delay will mean a dropped pass/hospital pass/running out of space. High risk = high reward.
  • An example of when to use Green Minus is a point in the game where your team has performed 2 Green Balls and a Green Plus. Use Green Minus to capitalise on defenders drifting too early when they see the switch pass and leaving space on the inside.
