Circle Tackling

I love using Sportplan. It's been a great help for co-ordinating hockey...
Laura, Hockey Coach

DESCRIPTION

Attacker starts with the ball on the dotted circle, but has to go around a marker 5 yds from the baseline before they can enter the circle.

Defender starts on the dotted line, but 3-4 yards back.

Can be done both side of the field.

Attacker scores 1 point for a PC and 2 for a goal.

Defender scores 1 point for clean tackle, 1 point for missed shot, 1 point for GK save.

COACHING POINTS

Defender wants to:

  • Close the gap as quickly as possible to make Attacker put their head down.
  • Shorten steps as they get closer so they can change direction more easily if needed
  • Approach Attacker with stick in front of body in a low position to protect their feet. Protecting the 90 degree pass.
  • Channel run with the Attacker
  • Ensure Attacker cannot drag back inside the defender.
  • Force Attacker to the baseline
  1. Make tackle when Attacker drags back
  2. Run attacker into GK
  3. Force attacker to shoot from poor angle.
