Circle Possession Game

I really appreciate the Hockey Coaching on Sportplan. The senior girls...
Petra

DESCRIPTION

Defensive underload in the circle: 3v5, with 3 more (Red) defenders around the edge of the circle.

Attackers start with the ball. If they can make [5] consecutive passes, they can then attack the goal.

If the defenders win possession + can pass to a team-mate outside the circle, they can attack the goal 6v5.

Reset when: either team scores.

If the ball is hit out of the playing zone:

  • Coach throws on a random ball, or
  • Free hit to the other team from the edge of the circle.

Variation:

  • 4v5 in the circle.
  • smaller group: i.e. 2v3 or 3v4 in the circle, with 2 outside defenders
  • larger group: use a 1/4 pitch and have the spare defenders stationed behind the 23m line.
  • The spare players are jokers: they can help the possession (Blue) team keep the ball by receiving passes from them. But if a defender (Red) wins the ball and passes to them, they all join the Reds in attacking the goal.

COACHING POINTS

Focus is on winning back possession, but could also be on keeping possession.
