This depends on the level you're playing. For me, the playmaker is the pivot. They are generally players who can see a pass, and keep the ball moving, occasionally dribbling, but generally playing a killer ball for the forwards. For that reason, I'd play them as an attacking or defensive midfielder, or as a sweeper who has the ability to roam the whole pitch.
