When does the defender engage or try to make a tackle?

Hi Kasey. In the "Defend the Circle" drill, the defender should engage as far away from the circle edge as possible. The defender's priority is to stop the attacker from getting through specific gates, and they should avoid getting too close to the player attacking the circle to prevent the attacker from easily entering the circle.
