What kind of defensive presses do you all run for highshoolers? And is there a resource that will make it easier to teach to them? We play a 4-4-3 with 2 sitters in the midline. Iâm used to a Fall Away Press, but am having a hard time teaching it.

Hi Misty,
Teaching a fall away press is difficult, players often get into the mentality of being too passive and thinking of this as a rest as opposed to a proper press. Therefore, it can be easier to get the basics of pressing by starting higher and then falling back gradually.
The aim of the press should be to force the ball wide to the half-backs to then press at the sides to limit passing options and win the ball back. Start by having your forward line starting on the opposition 25 with the center forward positioned in front of the player on the ball. The wide forwards should be tucked in slightly to limit the passing channels through the middle and encourage the ball to go wide. Once they`ve passed wide, the center-forward needs to split the pitch, keeping it to one side to force the half back down the line.
This high intensity should be taken into the fall-away press. It`s not a time to be passive and take a rest, instead you need to encourage the opposition into your area and press them hard to win the ball back in congested areas.
